Press Presents: Cara Briggs Farmer

June 30th – August 7th, 2019
Opening Reception: Wednesday, July 10th, 6-8pm

“Women who weld are a rare breed of badass, and I’m one of them.”

After an eight-year tenure of building, engineering, and designing stage scenery in the Minneapolis/St. Paul theater scene, Cara Briggs Farmer decided it was time to make art on her own terms. Cara returned to her home state of Iowa in 2008 and set up shop. Since then she has been populating outdoor spaces and fine interiors with her work.

MIG welded steel is Cara’s primary medium. She is as comfortable designing and building with new materials as she is improvising with reclaimed steel. When Cara is designing with a Prairie School aesthetic, the ratio Phi, or anything heavily geometric, she relies on CAD drafting and new steel to realize her vision. Those pieces are intended to feel refined and offer the viewer a medium for contemplation, reflection, and inspiration. Other pieces start in the junkyard. Salvaged materials allow Cara to create art and fine furnishings which speak to the object’s past while inviting the viewer to re-imagine what is possible.
