Current Artist: Bekah Ash
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 25th; 6-8PM
Bekah Ash is a Midwest, queer, contemporary painter. A prolific artist who has created thousands of fictional portraits (mostly in oil on canvas though any surface is fair game) since graduating from the University of Iowa in 2002.
Her portrait work is recognizable through the use of strong contour lines and vibrant colors. Her studio is constantly overflowing with materials, typically working around 20 at a time, with hundreds in constant progress. Working in this way, bouncing between art, adding layers over time with an openness to where the painting will land, is essential to her work. While the portraits are fictional, Bekah’s paintings “are stories about people she has never met but knows well.” The journey of the art from studio to exhibit to homes/spaces where the paintings are destined to belong, continues to feel magical to her.
Her work is part of various permanent collections, featured in top-ranking art festivals, and images published in popular media.
