When Press Coffee first opened up in 2013, the shop stayed open until 9 p.m. every night like our friends at Capanna Coffee just up the road in North Liberty. Shops in downtown Iowa City don’t close until 10 or even 11 p.m. but with a crowd who is always looking for a place to study, that works for them. Good business is doing what makes sense for every individual business, and in North Coralville location, we believe a 4 p.m. closing time is what makes the most sense for our area.

We understand that things have been a little up and down lately with altered winter break hours and inclement weather forcing our doors closed early a few times in January. We also tried out an early close on Mondays, because who wants to prolong those? BUT, we have settled on a regular closing time for each day and that will be 4 p.m.

Our morning crowd consists of regulars who are on their way to work, maybe even fresh from the gym next door, or transporting a gaggle of kids to school or daycare. We know you by name and order, maybe even getting it started before you walk through the door: large brewed coffee with a shot and room for heavy whip, iced oat milk latte with sugar-free pumpkin pie syrup, large americano with room for cream, single macchiato with skim. We love being a part of your daily morning routine.

We also appreciate when you schedule your business meeting, appointments with a contractor, or weekly check-in with your best pals at the shop. We may even be able to graduate med school soon after all the anatomy study sessions we have been in earshot of over the years. If any of these occasions are in need of a place with access to coffee after 4 p.m., don’t hesitate to give us a call or e-mail to reserve our space for your group. We know that downtown gets saturated with studiers in the weeks leading up to midterms and finals, so if you want to put a group together and head to a quieter location, let us know! We are also no stranger to graduation and holiday parties as well, so feel free to chat with us about your needs.

Press Coffee is also excited to announce a new way to get your coffee, and fast, starting next week! On March 10th we will begin partnering with Jump!, an app that will allow you to order and pay before even stepping into the shop. That way you can skip the line and the wait, and go right to pick up. It’s great for those times you have a carload full of kids or dogs and would prefer to be in and out quickly. It will also be helpful if you realize 4 p.m. is coming up quickly and you still need that afternoon French press pick-me-up. We are excited about this addition to our services and think Jump! is a great app for independent coffee shops. It is new to Iowa City but already thriving in Minneapolis and Madison.
